CAMELLIA HOUSE

Planting Fields Arboretum, Oyster Bay, New York

FEASIBILITY STUDY & CONDITIONS ASSESSMENT

A former Gold Coast estate, Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park is comprised of 409 acres of greenhouses, lawns, formal gardens, woodland paths, and outstanding plant collections. The Camellia House was constructed in 1914 by the William H Lutton Company Inc., a firm that was purchased and managed by Lord & Burnham.  The design is attributed to Lowell & Sargent.  Although an extensive rehabilitation took place in the 1980’s, the masonry was not repaired to the extent and with the same degree of attention given the glass roof and walls.  Beginning last year, a detailed study has been made of the greenhouse supporting walls and embedded framing. A draft assessment report has been provided outlining phasing and costs for repair, replication and comprehensive rehabilitation of the greenhouse walls and partial re-glazing at all valleys and gable ends.
